Domino Server Issues Troubleshooting

Issue:
Domino Traveler lost the ability to include links requiring a notes.ini setting to be added.
After adding the notes.ini setting for Traveler, both the routing mail server (which also runs Traveler) and the secondary location Domino servers are also not displaying MS Teams HTML links but instead are including the short alternative description in Notes clients.

Upgrading from HCL Domino 11.0.1 FP6 to Domino 12.0.1 and Domino 12.0.2 did not help to fix the issue. Notes clients using a HCL Domino 11.0.1 FP3 server, were still able to see the links (regardless of what ini settings were added or removed below.)

To work-around the RICH Text issue with iOS and Android devices not doing RTF content, an older tech note and discussion shows that adding the following to the notes.ini on the Domino mail "hub" server fixes the issue.
ICAL_FORCEADD_XALTDESC=1
This notes.ini entry adds the X-ALT-DESC field in the properties dialog. It removes the HTML, and replaces into it the plain text MIME content which contains a link. Phrased, another way, it causes the Notes client and the Traveler service to no longer see the HTML version, and display the simple link phrase and link instead for iOS and Android clients. Unfortunately, we noticed after upgrading from HCL Domino 11.0.1 FP2 and FP3 to Domino FP6 or higher, that the link's syntax in the X-ALT-DESC is such that no link displays in the Notes client. The short text and link is still working for the Traveler devices, though.

Another post says to make this notes.ini entry above, had HCL advising to set to:
ICAL_FORCEADD_XALTDESC=0
ICAL_ReadXAltDesk=0

We then removed ICAL_ReadXAltDesk=0

That did help the Notes client, but not the mobile devices. Users no longer had a working link again.

Important: If you are upgrading from HCL Domino 11.0.1 FP2 or FP3 to HCL Domino FP6, or HCL Domino 12.0.1 or Domino 12.02, do not leave in this workaround.
This issue has been fixed in the Domino and the clients, and the old notes.ini entries must be removed, if added.

Solution:
This past week HCL gave us a new solution which is working for a mixed Domino 12.0.2 and Domino 11.0.1 FP6 environment.

RESTORE MS Teams Links in Notes Clients:
Below is our new notes.ini entry configuration.

Remove:
ICAL_FORCEADD_XALTDESC=0

Add back:
ICALReadXaltDesk=0
(notice no underline after ICAL, this time.)

This restored the HTML MS Teams MIME emails being read correctly by the Notes clients on the "hub" server running Domino 12.0.2 and the other Domino servers running Domino 11.0.1 FP6. The Notes client users whose home mail servers were on the HCL Domino 11.0.1 FP3 servers, downstream from the hub, which were not yet upgraded, were not harmed from the change.

The Traveler 12.0.1 FP1 system, running on the MS Windows-based Domino 12.0.2 server, was again showing the RT content, but the "click here" to join was just text, and not a link again.

RESTORE MS Teams Links in Traveler iOS and Android Clients:
To restore the "click here" links working in Traveler 12.0.1 FP1, the following was added to the notes.ini on the Traveler Domino server:
NTS_CALENDAR_RICHTEXT_TO_DEVICE=true

We shutdown the Domino service while making notes.ini changes. Therefore, Domino was "cycled" for each of these notes.ini updates.
